Obadiah is the shortest book in the whole Bible — just one chapter! It is a message about being proud, and about why we should never laugh when someone else is having a hard day.
Today's Story
God gave a man named Obadiah a message. It was for a group of people called Edom.
The people of Edom lived way up high, in houses tucked into tall rocky cliffs. They felt strong. They felt safe. They thought, “Nobody can ever get up here to us. We are the best!”
But God saw their proud hearts. He said, “You think you live so high that you touch the stars. But I see you. Being proud will not keep you safe.”
Here is the saddest part. The people of Edom and the people of God's city, Jerusalem, were like cousins — one big family, all the way back to two brothers named Esau and Jacob.
So when enemies came and hurt Jerusalem, what should Edom have done? Run to help! Instead, they stood up on their cliffs and watched. They pointed. They laughed. They even grabbed some of the things that were left behind.
God was not pleased. He said, “You laughed at your own family when they were down. That was wrong.”
But God did not stop there. He promised that He would set things right. The proud would not stay on top forever. And God's people would be safe and rescued in the end. God always has the last word — and His word is good.
A Big Word
Talk About It
- Has anyone ever laughed at you when you fell down or made a mistake? How did that feel?
- The people of Edom watched their family get hurt and did nothing. What is one way you could help someone who is having a hard day?
- God noticed the proud hearts in Edom, even way up on their cliffs. What do you think God notices about your heart?
