Lamentations 3:44 Meaning and Explanation

'Thou hast covered thyself with a cloud, that our prayer should not pass through.' The cloud that once signaled God's presence now feels like a barrier, a screen behind which he has hidden so that prayers cannot reach him. This echoes the earlier cry that God 'shutteth out my prayer,' and it names one of the heaviest trials of faith: the sense that one's prayers are not getting through.

Yet the very prayer that says 'our prayer cannot pass through' is itself a prayer, and it is being offered. The sufferers keep praying even while complaining that prayer seems blocked. This is the stubbornness of faith in the dark. And the reader, who has already seen verse twenty-two, knows that the cloud is not God's final posture; behind it waits the One whose compassions fail not and whose mercies are new every morning.
