What Does Luke 12:54 Mean?
Jesus turns from the disciples to the people, and begins with their weather-craft. In the land of Israel a cloud rising out of the west came in off the Great Sea, carrying rain — as Elijah's servant once saw from Carmel (1 Kings 18:44). The farmers and fishermen before Him read that sign instantly: straightway ye say.
He grants their competence in order to expose where it stops. People are skilled interpreters of whatever they care about — sky, soil, markets, harvests. The question He is preparing is why that same shrewdness goes unused on the greatest matter of all: what God is doing in their midst. Observation is not their problem; the direction of their attention is.
