Jesus plays the scene out. The host comes to honor the greater guest and must say to the self-promoted one, Give this man place. By then the middle seats are filled, so the descent is all the way down — and every step is taken with the room watching.
What pride grasps, it loses with interest; the man who began at the top ends lower than if he had never climbed. Jesus is describing more than dinner etiquette.
