The dispute ends not with a ruling but with a claim. 'The Son of man' — Jesus' chosen title, recalling the exalted figure of Daniel 7:13-14 — is Lord also of the sabbath. He does not say the sabbath no longer matters; he says it belongs to him.
Only the one who gave the day of rest can say what it is for, and here he stands in a grainfield saying it. The seventh day was blessed at creation (Genesis 2:3), and its Lord now walks among his disciples, feeding and defending them. To keep the sabbath rightly is to come to him, for rest, in the end, is found in a person (Matthew 11:28).
