What Does Mark 12:18 Mean?
A new set of challengers steps forward. The Sadducees were the priestly aristocracy of the temple; they held closely to the books of Moses and denied the resurrection of the dead (Acts 23:8). Their question, like the one before it, is not a search for truth but a test.
They come to mock what they have already dismissed, hoping a clever scenario will make resurrection look absurd. It is possible to stand in the temple, handle holy things daily, and still not believe that God raises the dead.
