What Does Mark 12:2 Mean?
The parable continues. In Jesus' day an absentee owner commonly leased land to tenants for a share of the produce, so the sending of a servant at "the season" is ordinary business. The owner asks only for what the lease promised him -- fruit from his own vineyard.
Behind the figure stands the long line of prophets God sent to his people, asking for the harvest his covenant deserved: justice, mercy, faithfulness. God plants and waits; then he asks. The request is not greed but right -- the vineyard is his. He still looks for fruit from lives he has planted and tended, and he still sends his word to ask for it.
