What Does Mark 12:22 Mean?
The hypothetical reaches its end: seven husbands, no children, and finally the widow's own death. The Sadducees have built the bleakest story they can imagine, confident that no resurrection could ever sort it out.
Without resurrection, their story really is the whole story -- seven graves, then an eighth, and nothing more. They tell it as a jest, but it is in fact a portrait of life if death wins. The hope they mock is the only thing that keeps their tale from becoming everyone's biography. Jesus is about to declare that God is greater than the ending they assume.
