What Does Mark 12:24 Mean?
Jesus locates their mistake at its roots, and there are two: ignorance of the Scriptures, which carry the hope of the living God, and ignorance of God's power, which can do far more than rearrange the present world. The learned guardians of the temple are failed students of both.
Most unbelief still grows from one of these two soils -- not knowing what God has said, or not believing what God can do. The Scriptures without a sense of God's power become a closed book of old arrangements; a notion of power without the Scriptures drifts vague and shapeless. Held together, they open into hope: the God who has spoken is strong enough to keep every word.
