What Does Mark 7:6 Mean?
Jesus does not debate basins and vessels. He opens Isaiah 29:13 and reads his questioners into it, addressing them as hypocrites — the word for stage actors, players of a part. Isaiah names the disease: worship that performs honor with the lips while the heart keeps its distance.
The diagnosis still searches us. Lips can learn the script of reverence while the heart drifts out of reach. Yet naming the distance is itself a mercy: Jesus exposes far-off hearts because hearts are what he came for. The worship he receives is not polished performance but the drawing near of the whole person.
