What Does Mark 8:30 Mean?
The command follows the confession at once, and the verb is strong — the same stern word Mark uses elsewhere for rebuke. The crowds of Galilee expected a conquering, throne-taking deliverer; that announcement, made now, would have lit the wrong fire.
The title is true, but it is not yet understood, as Peter himself is about to prove. Jesus will define Messiah by the cross before he allows the word to be broadcast, because truth proclaimed ahead of understanding can mislead as surely as error.
