What Does Mark 8:32 Mean?
After chapters of veiled parables and commands to silence, Jesus now speaks the cross with plain, unguarded boldness. Peter — only moments removed from his great confession — takes Jesus aside and begins to rebuke him, correcting the Master as one would correct a student gone wrong.
Peter can confess the Christ and still refuse the cross; the right title has arrived with the wrong expectations. A suffering, rejected, executed Messiah did not fit the script he carried, so he tries to edit the mission rather than revise the script. The temptation is timeless: to embrace Christ as we have imagined him and resist him as he actually is. Confession must let Jesus define his own road.
