What Does Mark 8:9 Mean?
Only now does Mark give the number: about four thousand, fed from seven loaves and a few small fish in Gentile country. With the meal complete, Jesus dismisses the crowd — the very thing he refused to do while they were still hungry.
The dismissal closes the loop opened in verse three. No one will faint by the way now; the people scatter to their homes carrying strength he provided. Jesus finishes what his compassion begins. He does not hold the crowd for his own sake or keep them dependent on the spectacle; he feeds them and releases them to live. Mercy, in his hands, is always complete, attending to the need from first ache to journey home.
