What Does Mark 9:1 Mean?
The promise closes the scene that began at Caesarea Philippi, where Peter confessed the Christ, Jesus first announced His coming death, and He called every follower to take up the cross (Mark 8:27-38). Having set the cost of discipleship at its highest, Jesus adds assurance: some standing there will see the kingdom of God come with power before they taste death.
Mark places this word immediately before the transfiguration, six days later, when three of those standing there behold His glory on the mountain. The promise answers the fear that following a rejected Messiah means backing a lost cause. The kingdom is no distant dream; its power is already breaking in, and those who walk the way of the cross will see for themselves that the glory is real.
