Mark 9:16 Meaning and Explanation

Jesus takes command of the scene with a question, asking the scribes what they are disputing with His disciples. He draws the attention, and the attack, away from the beaten nine and onto Himself.

There is quiet grace in the question. Jesus steps between His followers and their accusers, as He always does (1 John 2:1). He also brings the trouble into the open, for nothing can be healed while it stays buried in a quarrel. Christ still invites His people to say plainly what the trouble is, not because He does not know, but because honest speech in His presence is where help begins.
