What Does Mark 9:37 Mean?
Jesus completes the picture: whoever receives one such child in His name receives Him, and whoever receives Him receives not Him only but the Father who sent Him. A chain of welcome runs from the lowliest person in the room all the way to the throne of God.
Christ so identifies Himself with the small that kindness done to them lands upon Him (Matthew 25:40). No act of welcome is little; to make room for an overlooked person in His name is to entertain the Lord Himself, and behind Him, the Father. The verse turns every nursery, doorway, and forgotten corner where the small are received into a meeting place with God.
