What Does Mark 9:39 Mean?
Jesus overrules the prohibition: forbid him not. A man through whom His name is working real deliverance is no enemy in the making, for no one who does a mighty work in that name can lightly turn and speak evil of Him. The work itself binds the worker's heart to Christ.
Jesus is unthreatened by good done beyond His disciples' oversight. He guards the honor of His name, not their monopoly on it. Where His name is doing genuine good, His followers are to rejoice rather than regulate, as Paul rejoiced that Christ was preached (Philippians 1:18). The verse calls for largeness of heart wherever the power of Jesus is truly at work.
