What Does Mark 9:4 Mean?
Two towering figures of Israel's story appear: Moses, through whom the law was given, and Elijah, chief among the prophets. Each had met God on a mountain, Moses at Sinai and Elijah at Horeb, and each left the world in an extraordinary way. Now they stand on another mountain, talking with Jesus.
The law and the prophets do not compete with Jesus; they converse with Him. Luke records that they spoke of His coming departure at Jerusalem (Luke 9:31), the very suffering He had just foretold. All Scripture leans toward this Person and this hour, and the reader who walks long with Moses and the prophets will find that every road ends at the feet of Christ (Luke 24:27).
