What Does Mark 9:49 Mean?
A bridging word joins the fire of judgment just named to another fire: for every one shall be salted with fire, and every sacrifice shall be salted with salt. The law required salt, the salt of the covenant, on every offering (Leviticus 2:13). Salt purified and preserved; fire consumed what was offered to God.
Disciples are living sacrifices (Romans 12:1), and fire will touch every life offered to God, the testing and refining fire of trial (1 Peter 1:7; 4:12). Better the refining fire embraced than the ruinous fire refused. What burns away the disciple's dross is doing covenant work, purifying and preserving the offering until it is wholly the Lord's.
