Proverbs 19:13 Meaning and Explanation

The verse pairs two sources of household grief. A foolish son—one who rejects wisdom, acts recklessly, or brings shame—is a 'calamity' to his father, a source of deep pain and often material loss. The relationship is irreversible; the father cannot simply distance himself from his child's disgrace. Simultaneously, contentions (quarrels, strife) in marriage are compared to a 'continual dropping'—perhaps a leaking roof—that wears you down with persistent irritation.
