Psalms 118:21 Meaning and Explanation

Now the speaker stands in the sanctuary and addresses God directly: 'I will praise thee.' This is the consummation of the pilgrimage through the gates. The praise is rooted in gratitude for specific divine action: 'thou hast heard me.' God listened. He did not remain silent or indifferent to the speaker's cry. Hearing is the first movement of God's grace—to pay attention, to receive the prayer, to enter into the speaker's need. This hearing itself deserves praise.

The second reason for praise is that God 'art become my salvation.' God has not merely heard, but acted. He has become—he has actively made himself—the speaker's deliverer and restorer. Salvation encompasses rescue, healing, wholeness, and restoration. The speaker has moved from distress through deliverance to standing in God's house offering praise. The entire journey, each step, flows from God's willingness to hear and act. This is the foundation for all thanksgiving.
