What Does Revelation 15:8 Mean?
The chapter closes with the temple filling with smoke that streams from the glory and power of God, recalling how the cloud once filled the tabernacle and Solomon's temple so that none could stand to minister. Now no one is able to enter the sanctuary until the seven plagues are fulfilled. The holy place is, for a time, wholly given over to this final work.
The smoke of glory marks a season when God's purpose will run its course without interruption; the decree has gone out and will not be recalled until it is complete. There is awe in this, and also a summons. While the door of mercy still stands open, today is the time to draw near; the vision warns that a moment comes when judgment is settled and will surely be carried through. Yet the same glory that fills the temple is the glory of the God whose ways are just and true, and whose final aim is a world made new.
