What Does Romans 14:5 Mean?
Paul widens the question from food to sacred days. Some believers kept certain days as specially set apart; others treated every day as equally the Lord's. As with diet, he refuses to legislate one practice for all and instead aims at the heart behind the practice.
'Let every man be fully persuaded in his own mind.' Conviction here is not to be borrowed or imposed but reached honestly before God. A practice held in doubt is hollow; a practice held in settled faith honors the Lord. Paul trusts each conscience, formed under God, more than he trusts the pressure of the crowd -- and so he asks for inward certainty rather than outward conformity.
