Jesus Alone on the Cross

Jesus hangs alone upon the cross above the emptying hill of Golgotha and, when the hour has come, gives a loud cry and yields up his spirit (Matthew 27). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
