Simon the Cyrenian Compelled to Carry the Cross
As Jesus is led to Golgotha, the soldiers seize Simon of Cyrene, coming in from the country, and lay the cross on him to carry behind Jesus (Luke 23). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
