Leading the armed crowd into the garden, Judas approaches with the agreed sign and kisses Jesus, betraying him into the hands of those who seize him (Matthew 26). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

Depicted passages
French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
