The Thieves Legs Are Broken

To hasten death before the Sabbath, soldiers break the legs of the two crucified with Jesus, but finding him already dead they pierce his side instead (John 19). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
