Teaching in the temple, Jesus pronounces a series of woes against the scribes and Pharisees for their hypocrisy and the heavy burdens they lay on others (Matthew 23). A watercolor by the French painter James Tissot, from his life of Christ.

Depicted passages
French painter who, after a vision experience in 1885, devoted the rest of his career to an extensive illustrated New Testament based on travel through the Holy Land. His watercolors are now held at the Brooklyn Museum.
