These would-be teachers of the law confidently assert things they do not actually understand.

What Does 1 Timothy 1:7 Mean?

The men Paul describes wanted the title and standing of teachers of the law, yet they grasped neither their own words nor the matters they spoke about so boldly.

Confidence is no proof of understanding. Paul gently exposes a danger for any age: the urge to instruct others while still unclear oneself. True teaching begins with humility before the truth, not with the desire to be seen as wise.
