Context

Ezekiel 37 records the vision of the valley of dry bones. The Spirit sets Ezekiel in a valley full of bones and asks whether they can live. God then commands him to prophesy, picturing the seemingly dead nation of Israel being raised and restored. Verse 4 is the first command to speak God's word over the bones.

What Does Ezekiel 37:4 Mean?

Ezekiel 37:4 is God's command to speak His word over what seems utterly dead: "O ye dry bones, hear the word of the LORD." The prophet stands in a valley filled with bones that are not merely dead but very dry -- long dead, scattered, beyond any human hope of revival. They picture Israel in exile, a people who said, "Our bones are dried, and our hope is lost" (37:11). Into that scene of total hopelessness, God does something startling: He tells Ezekiel to preach to the bones.

The command teaches that God's word carries power where nothing else can reach. Bones cannot hear, and yet they are summoned to hear "the word of the LORD," because that word does not depend on the strength of those who receive it -- it creates the very response it calls for. Ezekiel is not asked to revive the bones himself; he is asked to speak God's message and trust God to do the impossible. This is the pattern of faith: we speak, sow, and pray over situations that look dead, while leaving the giving of life to God. No circumstance is too far gone, no person too hardened, no hope too long buried for the word of the LORD to reach. Where God speaks, even dry bones must listen.

In the Original Language

The Hebrew naba' (to prophesy) means to speak forth God's message, and dabar YHWH (the word of the LORD) is the powerful, creative word the dry bones are summoned to hear.

Application

When you face a situation that seems beyond all hope -- a relationship, a dream, a soul that appears spiritually dead -- remember the dry bones. Keep speaking and praying God's word over it, trusting that His word reaches where nothing else can. Your task is to speak in faith; the giving of life belongs to God.
