Explaining how love serves as the purpose of freedom, Paul shows that loving one's neighbour is the single command in which the whole law reaches its intended goal.
What Does Galatians 5:14 Mean?
Paul makes a sweeping claim: the entire law finds its fulfillment in one statement, the command to love your neighbour as yourself. Having just called the Galatians to serve one another in love, he now shows why love is no small thing. It is the sum toward which the whole law was pointing. The many requirements converge on a single aim.
He quotes a command given long before, "Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself," and calls it "one word" -- one principle that gathers up the rest. The word "fulfilled" suggests bringing something to its complete and intended end, not setting it aside. This is a striking turn in a letter that has warned so strongly against trusting law for one's standing. Paul is not contradicting himself; he is showing that genuine love accomplishes what the law was always reaching toward. The neighbour is anyone near enough to be loved, and the measure is "as thyself" -- the same care you instinctively give your own life. This keeps Christian freedom from drifting into self-interest. Love is not a vague feeling here but the concrete work of treating others with the seriousness you give yourself.
In the Original Language
Peplērōtai, "is fulfilled," means brought to its complete, intended end; ho plēsion, "neighbour," is the one near at hand; agapēseis, "thou shalt love," is the future-as-command quoting the older Scripture.
