What Does Haggai 2:11 Mean?
The Lord directs the prophet to consult the priests, the appointed guardians and teachers of God's instruction. Rather than simply declaring a truth, God leads His people to it through a question drawn from the law itself. The priests are asked to render a ruling, and from their answer a lesson about holiness and defilement will emerge.
There is wisdom in how God teaches here, drawing out understanding rather than merely imposing it. He honors the established means of instruction, working through the priests' knowledge of His law. The method invites the people to reason from what they already know. For the reader, it models a God who teaches patiently, who builds new insight on the foundation of revealed truth, and who would have His people understand, not just obey, the ways of holiness.
