Joel 1:13

Joel 1:13

Gird yourselves, and lament, ye priests: howl, ye ministers of the altar: come, lie all night in sackcloth, ye ministers of my God: for the meat offering and the drink offering is withholden from the house of your God.

Joel calls the priests to lead the mourning, spending the whole night in sackcloth because the offerings have stopped.

What Does Joel 1:13 Mean?

The summons now falls on the priests, the ministers of the altar. They are to gird themselves with sackcloth and lie in it all night, grieving without relief, because the offerings are withheld from the house of their God. Those who stand closest to the altar are called to mourn first and most, leading the people by their own example of brokenness.

Spiritual leaders are not exempt from sorrow; they are meant to feel the people's loss deeply and carry it before God. To lie all night in sackcloth is to refuse easy comfort and to let grief do its full work. The repeated phrase your God and my God presses the relationship home: the broken fellowship is with One who is still theirs. Leaders who weep over a people's distance from God are doing holy work, interceding by their tears and calling the whole community toward repentance.
