Joel summons the whole land to listen, beginning with the oldest, and asks whether anyone can remember a disaster like this.

What Does Joel 1:2 Mean?

The prophet calls first on the old men, the keepers of communal memory, then widens the call to every inhabitant of the land. His question is rhetorical: has anything like this happened in your lifetime, or even your fathers'? The expected answer is no. Something unprecedented has struck the land, and Joel wants the people to feel its weight rather than shrug it off as an ordinary bad year.

God often begins by asking us to pay attention. The first command of the book is simply hear. Before we can repent or hope, we must stop and reckon with what is actually before us. The appeal to the elders reminds us that some events are meant to be remembered and passed on, lest a generation forget what God has done and what He has allowed. To truly hear is already to begin to turn toward the One who speaks.
