Even the animals are told not to fear, for the pastures green again and the trees bear fruit once more.

What Does Joel 2:22 Mean?

The comfort reaches the very creatures that groaned in chapter one. Be not afraid, ye beasts of the field, God says, for the pastures of the wilderness spring green again. The fig tree and the vine, stripped bare before, now yield their strength and bear fruit. The reversal is complete; what was desolate flourishes, and what was hungry is fed.

Joel shows that God's restoration is wide enough to embrace all creation. The same land and animals that suffered now share in the renewal, for God cares for the work of His hands down to the cattle in the field. The springing pastures and fruitful trees are signs of a world being healed, a foretaste of the day when creation itself is set free into the glory of God's renewed order. The God who restores fig tree and vine is the God who makes all things new, beginning with mercy to His people and overflowing to the world.
