What Does Joel 2:27 Mean?
The greatest gift is not the grain but the Giver's presence. God promises, ye shall know that I am in the midst of Israel, and that I am the LORD your God, and none else. The restored harvest is meant to lead the people to this knowledge: that their God dwells among them and that He alone is God. The repeated pledge, my people shall never be ashamed, seals the promise of His abiding favor.
This is the heart of every blessing God gives, that His people would know Him and His nearness. Material restoration is wonderful, but it serves a deeper end: communion with the living God who is present in their midst. The longing for God to dwell with His people runs through all of Scripture and finds its fulfillment in the One who came to be God with us, and in the Spirit who makes God's presence near. To know that He is in our midst, and none else, is the surest ground that we shall never be put to shame.
