What Does Joel 2:6 Mean?
The effect on the people is visceral. Before the army's face they are much pained, gripped by anguish, and all faces gather blackness. Whether the phrase pictures faces flushed and contorted with fear or drained pale and dark with dread, the meaning is clear: sheer terror grips everyone. No one is unmoved by what approaches.
Joel records the human reality of facing judgment unprepared. Terror is the natural fruit of meeting God's reckoning without having turned to Him. The blackened faces are a warning the prophet sets before the people now, while there is still time to change course. The same God whose approaching day produces such dread is the God who pleads, in just a few verses, turn ye even to me with all your heart. The horror described here exists precisely to make that gracious invitation impossible to ignore.
