What Does Joel 2:9 Mean?
The army breaches the city. They run through its streets, scale the walls, climb onto the houses, and slip in through the windows like a thief. No barrier holds; even the privacy of the home is invaded. Anyone who has watched locusts pour through every crack knows the image, yet Joel lifts it to the dread of a city wholly overrun, its last defenses failed.
The thief breaking through the window speaks of a judgment that finds its way past every safeguard, reaching into the most guarded places of life. There is no hiding from the day of the LORD by locking a door. The only true refuge is not a stronger wall but a right relationship with God Himself. Joel's relentless picture presses the reader toward the heart of the chapter, where God opens not a door of escape from Himself but the door of return to Himself, the one shelter no enemy can breach.
