Context

This verse continues Jude's closing instructions to believers facing false teachers. Having told them to build and to pray (v. 20), he now anchors them in God's love and points their hope forward to Christ's mercy.

What Does Jude 1:21 Mean?

Jude 1:21 means that we are to remain in the place where God's love can reach and hold us, all the while looking forward with hope to the mercy of Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. This verse is the heart of Jude's closing charge, and it joins three time frames in one breath: a present command ("keep yourselves"), a settled reality ("the love of God"), and a future expectation ("looking for the mercy"). The believer stands in love now and leans toward mercy still to come.

"Keep yourselves in the love of God" does not mean earning that love, which is freely given, but staying within its embrace -- the way a branch stays joined to the vine. We can wander out of the warmth of that love through neglect or sin, so we are told to remain. And as we remain, we live in hopeful anticipation: "looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ." The Christian life is not anxious striving but watchful waiting, eyes lifted toward the day when mercy is fully revealed and eternal life is entered in its fullness.

In the Original Language

The Greek "tērēsate" (keep) means to guard or watch over, while "prosdechomenoi" (looking for) carries the sense of waiting expectantly and welcoming what is coming.

Application

Stay close to God through worship, obedience, and fellowship so you remain within the warmth of His love, and let the hope of Christ's mercy steady you through every trial.
