Micah summons not only Israel but all peoples and the whole earth to hear, as the Lord comes from His temple to bear witness.

What Does Micah 1:2 Mean?

The prophet opens a courtroom that spans the world. Every nation and the earth itself are called as the audience, and the Lord descends from His holy temple to testify. What begins as a word to two cities is set on a cosmic stage.

God is both witness and judge, and His verdict is never arbitrary; it rises from His own holiness. To be summoned before such a court is sobering, yet the same God who testifies against sin is the one who provides its remedy. The call to hear is a call still extended to every reader.

In the Original Language

shama (שָׁמַע), 'hear' -- to listen with the intent to heed, not merely to register sound.
