Paul tells Philemon that he regularly gives thanks to God for him and holds him up in prayer.

What Does Philemon 1:4 Mean?

Following his greeting, Paul moves into thanksgiving, as he often does. Even from prison, his life is shaped by prayer, and Philemon has a steady place in it. The mention is constant, a habit of grateful remembrance.

Before Paul asks anything of Philemon, he first thanks God for him. This is the posture of true persuasion among believers: gratitude before request, affirmation before appeal. To tell someone you pray for them with thanksgiving is to honor the work God has already done in them. It models how love speaks, beginning not with demands but with genuine joy over a brother.
