Context

Psalm 23 portrays the LORD as a shepherd caring for His sheep. This verse moves from provision and rest to inner restoration and trustworthy guidance along right paths.

What Does Psalm 23:3 Mean?

Psalm 23:3 declares two gracious works of the Shepherd: He restores the soul and He leads His sheep along right paths for the sake of His own name. Following the rest of green pastures and still waters, this verse turns to inner renewal and faithful guidance.

"He restoreth my soul" speaks of revival and recovery. The word can describe bringing back something lost, reviving what is faint, or turning back one who has wandered. When life drains us dry, when we are weary or have strayed, the Shepherd brings us back to life and to Himself. This is deeply comforting: the same God who provides also restores. Then "he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness," guiding His sheep along the right tracks -- the safe and good paths that lead where they should go. A shepherd knows the terrain and keeps the flock from dangerous routes. The reason given is striking: "for his name's sake." God leads us rightly not merely because we deserve it but because His own character and reputation are at stake. He is a faithful Shepherd, and He will act in keeping with who He is. This anchors our confidence not in our own worthiness but in God's faithfulness to Himself. Whether we need reviving or direction, the Shepherd supplies both, and He does so because of who He is.

In the Original Language

The verb yeshovev, "restoreth," comes from a root meaning to turn back or return, conveying reviving, refreshing, or bringing back one who has strayed.

Application

When you feel depleted or have wandered, let the Shepherd restore you, and trust His guidance into right paths, resting your confidence not on your own worthiness but on His faithfulness to His own name.
