Context

Psalm 33 praises God as creator and sovereign over the nations, whose counsel stands forever. Verse 12 draws out the blessedness of the people who belong to this God.

What Does Psalm 33:12 Mean?

This verse pronounces a blessing on the people whose God is the Lord and whom he has chosen as his own inheritance. The word "blessed" carries the sense of deep, settled happiness and favor. The source of that blessing is not power, wealth, or numbers, but relationship with God himself.

Two phrases describe this people. First, their God "is the LORD" -- they belong to him and he to them, a bond of covenant loyalty. Second, they are "chosen for his own inheritance," a striking image: God treasures his people as a precious possession, the way one cherishes a long-awaited inheritance. The earlier verses of the psalm have shown the Lord frustrating the schemes of nations; here the contrast is plain -- true blessing comes not from political might but from belonging to God. While the verse first looks to a covenant people, its principle reaches every reader: the deepest happiness of any community or person is found in having the Lord as God. To be claimed by him as his treasured portion is the highest blessing a people can know, more durable than any earthly security.

In the Original Language

The Hebrew 'ashre ("blessed") expresses deep happiness, and nachalah ("inheritance") pictures a treasured, lasting possession belonging to God.

Application

Seek the lasting blessing of belonging to God rather than the fragile security of wealth or status, both for yourself and your community.
