Psalm 95 is a call to worship that builds toward a warning against hardened hearts. Verse 1 opens with an enthusiastic invitation to praise God as the rock of salvation.
What Does Psalm 95:1 Mean?
This verse is a warm invitation to worship, and its first word sets the tone: "O come." It is a call, not a command barked from a distance, but an inviting summons to gather. And it is plural and shared -- "let us" -- worship here is something done together, a community lifting its voice as one. The psalm opens not with instruction but with welcome.
The worship called for is exuberant. "Sing unto the LORD" and "make a joyful noise" describe glad, full-throated praise -- the joyful noise is a shout of celebration, the sound of people genuinely happy in God. This is not subdued or reluctant; it is the overflow of joy. And the reason is given in the title for God: "the rock of our salvation." A rock is solid, immovable, dependable -- a sure foundation. To call God the rock of our salvation is to say that our rescue rests on something unshakable. The two halves fit together: because God is a firm and saving rock, the only fitting response is glad, wholehearted song. The verse invites the reader into that response -- to come, to join others, and to let joy in God find its voice.
In the Original Language
"Make a joyful noise" renders the Hebrew rua, a loud shout of celebration or triumph; "rock" is tsur, a massive crag, picturing God as an immovable foundation of salvation.
