What Does Ruth 1:10 Mean?

Orpah and Ruth answer Naomi's release with devotion: surely we will return with thee unto thy people. They are willing to leave Moab, their homeland and their prospects, to bind their futures to Naomi and to Israel. In this first reply the two women stand together, both moved by genuine love, both ready to follow.

Their words reveal hearts already drawn toward something beyond Moab, toward Naomi's people and, by implication, Naomi's God. To go to thy people is no small thing; it means surrendering the familiar for the uncertain, trading home for an old woman's grief-worn path. Love often speaks first in sweeping promises, and the testing of those promises comes only after. Here, at least, both daughters-in-law share the same impulse of faithfulness, and the Lord who sees the heart takes note of every step taken toward His people, even the steps not yet fully understood.
