What Does Ruth 1:18 Mean?
Naomi sees that Ruth is steadfastly minded, immovably resolved, to go with her, and so she stops pressing the matter. The arguing is over. Naomi has done everything to release Ruth, and Ruth has answered with an oath that cannot be undone. There is nothing left to say. In the quiet that follows, two widows simply walk on together toward Bethlehem.
The phrase steadfastly minded captures a settled, rooted resolve that no further reasoning can shift. Naomi recognizes it and yields to it. Sometimes love expresses itself not in more words but in finally accepting another's faithful choice. Ruth's resolve has won not an argument but a place, an unbreakable bond with Naomi and a future in the land of God's people. The Lord honors such firmness of heart. Where the world saw only two impoverished widows, God was assembling the family through which His promise would advance toward Bethlehem and the Redeemer to come.
