The two women reach Bethlehem, and the whole town is stirred, scarcely recognizing Naomi.

What Does Ruth 1:19 Mean?

The journey ends: the two women come at last to Bethlehem. Their arrival stirs the whole town, and the women of the city can scarcely believe their eyes, asking, Is this Naomi? The one who left years ago, a wife and mother, has returned a grief-worn widow, so changed by sorrow that they hardly know her. The question hangs in the air, gentle and stunned.

Bethlehem, the house of bread, receives back the daughter it had lost, and the contrast between who left and who returned is written on Naomi's very face. Suffering had altered her beyond recognition. Yet this homecoming, however bitter it feels, is the beginning of restoration; she has been brought back to the place of bread at the start of harvest. Often God leads His people home by paths of loss before He fills the emptiness. The city that asks Is this Naomi? will soon witness what the Lord can do for one who came back with nothing.
