What Does Ruth 2:5 Mean?

Boaz notices Ruth at once and turns to the servant overseeing his reapers with a question: Whose damsel is this? In a culture where a person's identity and protection came largely through family belonging, the question is natural; he wishes to know who she is and to whom she belongs. Ruth, the foreign widow, has caught the attention of the man who can help her most.

There is something tender in the fact that Boaz sees her at all. Amid a busy harvest, the master of the field takes note of one humble gleaner. So often the Lord's care begins with being seen, truly noticed, by someone who has the heart and the means to help. Ruth came hoping merely to find grace in someone's sight, and now the very owner of the field has set his eyes upon her. God's providence moves through such moments of being noticed, and what begins as a simple question will open into redemption.
