The overseer identifies Ruth as the Moabite woman who returned with Naomi.

What Does Ruth 2:6 Mean?

The overseer answers, identifying Ruth plainly: she is the Moabite woman who came back with Naomi from the country of Moab. He names her as a foreigner, an outsider in Bethlehem, and links her to the well-known story of Naomi's return. Word of Ruth's loyalty has clearly traveled; she is known not just as a stranger but as the one who came back with the grieving widow.

Notice how Ruth is defined here by her companionship with Naomi, the one who came back with her. Her devotion has already become part of her identity in the town. Though she is still marked as the Moabite, her faithfulness has begun to speak louder than her foreignness. God honors such loyalty by letting it be seen and remembered. The kindness we show, especially to those in sorrow, becomes part of who we are in the eyes of others and in the sight of the Lord, who forgets no act of love.
