What Does Ruth 4:11 Mean?
The whole assembly responds, We are witnesses, and then pronounces a beautiful blessing over the marriage. They pray that the Lord would make Ruth like Rachel and Leah, the two women who together built the house of Israel, and that Boaz would prosper in Ephratah and be famous in Bethlehem. The Moabite outsider is now blessed as a mother of Israel, welcomed fully into the covenant people.
This blessing is rich with grace. The townspeople do not hold Ruth's foreign origin against her; they pray she will stand among the great matriarchs who built the nation. The stranger has become a daughter of the promise, embraced and honored. And the mention of Bethlehem and Ephratah quietly points ahead, for from this very place and lineage a greater King would one day be born. God delights to weave the outsider into the center of His purposes. The community's prayer over Ruth shows how fully grace had received her, and how God's plan was reaching forward through her toward a future none could yet imagine.
